Our Guardian, Brother and Friend

Our Guardian Angels are our most faithful friends, because they are with us day and night, always and everywhere. We ought often to invoke them.~St. John Vianney

“Let’s confide to Our Guardian Angel our pains and sorrows. He is like a friend, like a brother.”~St. Pio

"Remember that you have an angel as a companion, guardian and friend."-Saint John Bosco

Make yourself familiar with the Angels, and behold them frequently in spirit. Without being seen, they are present with you.-St. Francis de Sales

"Take courage and pray; your guardian angel will also pray for you, and your prayers will be answered."- Saint John Bosco

Beside each believer stands an Angel as protector and shepherd, leading him to life.-St. Basil the Great

"We are like children, who stand in need of masters to enlighten us and direct us; and God has provided for this, by appointing his angels to be our teachers and guides."-Saint Thomas Aquinas

What a consolation it is to know one is always in the care of a celestial spirit, who does not abandon us (how admirable!) even when we offend God! How sweet is this great truth for the believer! Who, then, does the devout soul fear, who tries to love Jesus, having always close by such a great warrior? Oh, was he not one of the many who, together with the angel Saint Michael, up there in the heavens, defended the honor of God against Satan and against all the other rebellious spirits, and finally reduced them to perdition and bound them in hell? Well, know that he is still powerful against Satan and his minions; his charity has not diminished, nor will he ever fail in defending us. Develop the beautiful habit of always thinking of him; that near us is a celestial spirit, who, from the cradle to the tomb, does not leave us for an instant, guides us, protects us as a friend, a brother; will always be a consolation to us, especially in our saddest moments…Know…that this good Angel prays for you; offers to God all the good works you accomplish; your holy and pure desires. In the hours when you seem to be alone and abandoned, do not complain of not having a friendly soul to whom you can unburden yourself and in whom you can confide your sorrows. For pity's sake, do not forget this invisible companion, always present to listen to you, always ready to console you.~St. Pio

Oh delicious intimacy, oh blessed company! O if all men could understand this great gift that God, in His excess of love for man, assigned to us, this celestial spirit. Often remember his presence. You must fix on him the eyes of your soul: thank him, pray to him; he is so refined, so sensitive. Respect him, be in constant fear of offending the purity of his gaze.~St. Pio

What will be, O my dear Raffaelina, the consolation when, at the moment of death, your soul will see this Angel, so good, who accompanied you through life and was so liberal in maternal care. Oh may this sweet thought make you grow always more fond of the Cross of Jesus, this being also what your good Angel wants. May the desire to see this inseparable companion arouse in you that charity which incites you to leave this body quickly.

Oh what a holy and salutary thought it is to want to see our good Angel. It is this thought which should make us want to leave this dark prison in which we are bound. O Raffaelina, where do my thoughts fly to now...? I treat this dear little Angel, I do not say as a friend, but as one of the family. And, to tell you the truth, this little Angel does not seem to be the least little bit offended by my treatment of him. How dear and how good he is.

Invoke your Guardian Angel that he illuminate you and will guide you. God has given him to you for this reason. Therefore use him! ~ Send me your Guardian Angel—he doesn't have to pay a ticket for the train and he doesn't wear out his shoes.~St. Pio

"If you wish to please Jesus and Mary, obey your guardian angel’s inspirations."-Saint John Bosco

He will give his angels charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.~Psalm 91:10-11

See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and heed his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your sin. My authority resides in him. If you heed his voice and carry out all I tell you, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes. ~Exodus 23:20-22

"The servants of Christ are protected by invisible, rather than visible, beings. But if these guard you, they do so because they have been summoned by your prayer." -- St. Ambrose.

You are amazed that your guardian Angel has done you such obvious favours. And you should not be amazed: that's why our Lord has placed him beside you.~St. Jose Escriva

Never forget the Guardian Angel who is always with you, never leaving you, whatever wrong you might do. Oh, the ineffable goodness of our good Guardian Angel! How many times—alas!—I have made him cry for not having wanted to comply with his wishes, which were also God's. May this, our most faithful friend, free us from further disloyalty.~St. Pio

You say that in such surroundings there are many occasions of going astray? That's true, but is there not also the presence of the guardian Angels?~St. Jose Escriva

"When tempted, invoke your angel. He is more eager to help you than you are to be helped! Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him; he trembles and flees at the sight of your guardian angel."- Saint John Bosco

"Be good. This will make your angel happy. When sorrows and misfortunes, physical or spiritual, afflict you, turn to your guardian angel with strong trust and he will help you."- Saint John Bosco

"Pray to your guardian angel. Invoke his aid if you should find yourself in any serious danger of body or soul, and I assure you that he will help and protect you."- Saint John Bosco

Win over the guardian Angel of that person whom you wish to draw to your apostolate. He is always a great 'accomplice'.~St. Jose Escriva

This advice is perfect for those you are looking for to join the Four Men Prayer Groups!

See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.~Matt 18,10

The first thing about the angels that we ought to imitate, is their consciousness of the Presence of God.~St. John Vianney

The Angels take great pleasure in helping us with our enterprises, when they are in accordance with God's will.~St. John Vianney

If you find it impossible to pray, hide behind your good Angel and charge him to pray in your stead.~St. John Vianney

We ought to ask the Blessed Virgin, the angels, and the saints to pray for us that we may receive the good God as worthily as it is possible for us to receive Him. ~St. John Vianney

The devil writes down our sins—our Guardian Angel all our merits. Labor that the Guardian Angel's book may be full, and the devil's empty.~St. John Vianney

If we did like St. Remigius, we should never be angry. Being questioned by a Father of the desert as to how he managed to be always in an even temper, replied: "I often consider that my Guardian Angel is always by my side....."

Do not try to please everybody. Try to please God, the angels, and the saints—they are your public.~St. John Vianney

With what humility should we assist at Mass, if we realized that our Guardian Angel was kneeling beside us, prostrate before the majesty of God! With what eagerness should we not ask him to offer our prayers to Jesus Christ !~St. John Vianney

After thanking our Guardian Angel who has remained by our side during our sleep, we should ask him for his protection during the day.

What a comfort to you it is to know that when we go out of the house, we are never alone en route.~St. John Vianney

When we are walking in the streets, let us fix our eyes on Our Lord bearing his Cross before us; on the Blessed Virgin who is looking at us; on our Guardian Angel who is by our side.~St. John Vianney

What happiness it is to a Guardian Angel to have the care of a pure soul. When the soul is pure, all the Court of Heaven looks upon it with joy.~St. John Vianney

If we could only see the JOY of our Guardian Angel when he sees us fighting our temptations! ~St. John Vianney

It is our angels who ask God to grant us a deep sorrow for our sins.~St. John Vianney

If then we have Angels, let us be sober, as though we were in the presence of tutors; for there is a demon present also.~St. John Chrysostom

In the case of those who are making progress from good to better, the good angel touches the soul gently, lightly, sweetly, as a drop of water enters a sponge, while the evil spirit touches it sharply, with noise and disturbance, like a drop of water falling on a rock.~St. Ignatius of Loyola

On Saint Gemma Galgani’s Guardian Angel:

“…He let her see him sometimes raised in the air with outspread wings, with his hands extended over her, or else hands joined in an attitude of prayer. At other times he would kneel beside her. If they were reciting vocal prayers or the Psalms, they did so alternately; if aspirations or prayers from the heart, “they rivaled one another” [these are Gemma’s words] that is, they had a holy rivalry as to whom would say them with more fervor saying ‘Viva Gesu’ or ‘Benedetto di Dio’ and other such beautiful invocations. When it was time for meditation, the angel inspired her with sublimest ideas, and moved her affections so that the result of this holy exercise may be more perfect. The subject of these meditations was, for the most part, the Passion of Our Lord, the angel like a good master, laid open its profound mysteries to her soul. “Look” he would exclaim, “at what Jesus suffered for men. Consider each of these wounds. It is love that has opened them all. See how horrible sin is, since to expiate it, so much pain and so much love have been necessary”. These and other such reflections went straight to the heart of the fervent Gemma”

"I was in bed suffering greatly, when on a sudden I became absorbed in prayer. I joined my hands and, moved with heartfelt sorrow for my countless sins, I made an act of deep contrition. My mind was wholly plunged in this abyss of my crime against my God, when I beheld my Angel standing by my bed. I felt ashamed of being in his presence. He instead was more than courteous with me, and said, kindly: "Jesus loves thee greatly. Love Him greatly in return." Then he added: "Are you fond of Jesus' Mother? Salute Her very often, for She values such attention very much, and unfailingly returns the salutations offered to Her; and if you do not sense this, know that She makes a proof of your unfailing trust." He blessed me and disappeared.

Her guardian angel guides her in spiritual matters

“One evening, when I was suffering more than usual, I was complaining to Jesus and telling him that I would not have prayed so much if I had known that He was not going to cure me, and I asked Him why I had to be sick this way. My angel answered me as follows: ‘If Jesus afflicts you in your body, it is always to purify you in your soul. Be good.’ Oh, how many times during my long illness did I not experience such consoling words in my heart! But I never profited by them.”~St. Gemma

“From the moment I got up from my sick bed (was cured –editor) my guardian angel began to be my master and guide. He corrected me every time I did something wrong, and he taught me to speak but little, and only when I was spoken to.  One day, when those in the house were speaking of some person, and were not speaking very well of her, I wanted to speak up, but the angel gave me a severe rebuke.

He taught me to keep my eyes cast down, and one time in Church he reproved me strongly saying to me: ‘Is this the way you conduct yourself in the presence of God?’

And another time he admonished me in this way ‘If you are not good, I will not let you see me anymore’. He taught me many times how to act in the presence of God; that is, to adore Him in His infinite goodness, His infinite majesty, His mercy and in all His attributes”

Saint Gemma’s guardian angel ordered her to write the following:

'Remember daughter, that whoever truly loves Jesus speaks little and bears all things. I command thee, on behalf of Jesus, to always refrain from giving your own opinion, unless it is asked; always to prefer silence to upholding your own views. Whenever you have committed a fault, accuse yourself of it at once, and do not wait for others to accuse thee. Give full obedience to your confessor, and to those whom he commands thee to obey; and be always sincere with them. Remember to guard your eyes, and be assured that the eyes that are mortified, shall behold the beauties of heaven.’To humble her, her guardian angel once said to her: “Poor child! How imperfect you are! How much you need others to keep a constant guard over thee. Oh, how much patience I must have with thee.”

"My Angel is a little severe, but I am glad of it. During the last few days, he corrected me as often as three or four times a day"~St. Gemma

"Saint Gemma, seeing the great charity her angel lavished upon her, loved her angel immensely, and his name was always on her tongue as well as in her heart."~Father Gemanus

‘Dear Angel’ she would say ‘I love you so!’ ‘And why’ the Angel asked. ‘Because you teach me how to be good, and to keep humble, and to please Jesus'."~St. Gemma Galgani

St. Gemma Galgani teaches us a lesson of the very highest importance, viz., that we have an angel as really and truly present with us as she had, though we do not see him.  This dear Angel loves us, just as her Angel loved her, with an immense love and is as able and ready to help us as her Angel helped her.
We would do well to ask this little Saint to obtain for us the grace to feel and realize that our Angel is with us.  It does not matter whether we see him or not.  The great thing is to know and feel that he is certainly with us and never leaves us.
What is of paramount importance to us is that the Holy Angels seek in every possible way to share with us this immense ocean of love and happiness which they themselves enjoy.  Their generosity knows no bounds.
This is a truth that we must do our best to understand fully and clearly.  Were a rich man to say to us, “Ask me for everything you wish and I will most readily give it to you,” how happy we should be!  Certainly we would not hesitate to ask for all we need.
This is exactly what the Angels say to us: “Ask us and we will give you a share of all our treasures, all our graces, all our happiness, and we will give you some of all we have.”  Their goodness and generosity are immense…If only we knew them better and loved them more, and were more docile to their constant whisperings, our happiness would be unspeakably great.

If some rare chance brings us into the presence of a King or Queen, we salute the royal personage and feel flattered if our salute is returned with a gracious smile, or with a few words, and still more if the royal person stops to speak with us.
We meet the Angels, not by chance, not seldom, but every day.  They see us, they love us and repay every attention we show them with a substantial return.  Yet so many make no account of them! What lamentable ignorance!
If we but say, “Dearest Angels here present, I honor and love you and give thanks to God for all the glory He has given you.” Every one of these hundreds of Angels will hear and receive with pleasure our greeting and will repay us with a special mark of friendship, for the Angels never do things by halves.  They are not like us, poor mortals, they never forget and they never grow cold.  When once they are our friends, they are our friends forever.
We can also give them immense pleasure by offering mass or our good works in their honor and thanking God for all the beauty and holiness and glory that He has given them.  If we do so, they will repay us a thousand times over."

“Always remember that you are in the presence of your guardian angel…Never do in the presence of your guardian angel what you would not do in my presence.” Continually reminding ourselves of their presence is an excellent means of overcoming temptation. Let us frequently invoke their intercession in the time of temptation and trial. Let us revere their presence, bless their benevolence, and trust in their care.”~St. Bernard
